Sketch ha sido invitado a realizar el diseño museográfico de la exhibición Forecast Form, Art in the Caribbean Diaspora 1990s–Today, que inauguró en el Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA Chicago) en Chicago el 19 de noviembre de 2022.
Forecast Form está instalada en las galerías del cuarto piso del MCA Chicago: cuatro espacios alargados techados con bóvedas de cañón e iluminados por amplios tragaluces de vidrio esmerilado. Estas galerías están interconectadas con vanos alineados que permiten múltiples maneras de recorrerlas. Su forma y configuración, que rompen con el arquetipo de la caja blanca, presentan retos importantes para montar una exhibición.
Para Forecast Form, Sketch ha construido en los accesos a las galerías dos grandes volúmenes de madera: los “bookends”. Estos elementos, con paredes que no tocan los muros de las galerías originales, son edificios temporales que establecen espacios con proporciones más humanas y generan un recorrido lineal por la exhibición. Sus interiores son ámbitos íntimos y cálidos que señalan (y celebran) el inicio y el final de cada visita. Haciendo eco de las galerías que ocupan, los bookends tienen cielos traslúcidos hechos de tela tensada que bañan sus interiores con una luz más tenue que la de las galerías abovedadas. Así, estos ámbitos excepcionales comprimen al visitante y limpian el paladar antes y después del recorrido.
Los bookends están hechos de materiales sencillos y pragmáticos: una estructura de piezas de madera de construcción con interiores revestidos en láminas de madera contrachapada. Dependiendo de cómo se los mire, estos materiales hacen referencia a las modestas técnicas constructivas típicas del Caribe o a las cajas para transportar piezas de arte típicas de los grandes museos. El aspecto de caja de transporte es enfatizado por la estructura de madera, que permanece expuesta en las caras exteriores de los bookends. La estructura también se exhibe dramáticamente a las entradas de la exhibición. Aquí, alineados con los vanos de los muros blancos del edificio, están los vanos de los bookends, de menor tamaño y enmarcados con jambas y dinteles de madera de construcción. El visitante entra a la galería para entrar al bookend, y sale de él para salir a la galería.
Al igual que en el resto del trabajo de Sketch, los materiales simples están aplicados con respeto y atención al detalle. La estructura está modulada para aprovechar las dimensiones de las láminas y lograr un patrón de juntas organizado y racional. Las láminas se instalaron cuidadosamente para incorporar las inevitables variaciones en textura y color y evitar cualquier patron repetitivo o impresión de orden.
Finalmente, Sketch participó en el diseño de una banca semicircular de madera de construcción y base de acero, que aparece en el enorme vestíbulo de la exhibición y se repite en algunas de las galerías. El diseño modular de la banca permite agruparlas y organizarlas en múltiples configuraciones y sus intenciones conceptuales se mantienen congruentes con el resto de la muestra.
La exhibición Forecast Form estará en exhibición en el MCA Chicago hasta el 23 de abril de 2023, y después viajará a otros museos en los Estados Unidos.

Sketch has been invited to create the museographic design for the exhibition Forecast Form, Art in the Caribbean Diaspora 1990s–Today, which opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA Chicago) in Chicago on November 19, 2022.
Forecast Form is installed in the MCA Chicago's fourth-floor galleries: four elongated spaces roofed with barrel vaults and illuminated by large frosted glass skylights. These galleries are interconnected with aligned openings that allow for multiple ways of traversing them. Their shape and configuration, which break with the archetype of the white box, present significant challenges to mounting an exhibition.
For Forecast Form, Sketch has built two large wooden volumes at the entrances to the galleries: the "bookends". These elements, with walls that do not touch the walls of the original galleries, are temporary buildings that establish spaces with more human proportions and generate a linear path through the exhibition. Their interiors are warm, intimate settings that signal (and celebrate) the beginning and end of each visit. Echoing the galleries they occupy, the bookends have translucent ceilings made of stretched fabric that bathe their interiors in a light that’s dimmer than that of the vaulted galleries. Thus, these exceptional environments compress the visitor and cleanse the palate before and after the visit.
The bookends are made of simple, pragmatic materials: a structure of standard lumber with interiors clad in plywood sheets. Depending on how you look at them, these materials make reference to the modest construction techniques typical of the Caribbean or to the crates for transporting art pieces typical of large museums. The shipping crate aspect is emphasized by the wooden structure, which remains exposed on the outer surfaces of the bookends. The structure is also dramatically displayed at the exhibition entrances. Here, aligned with the openings in the white walls of the building, are the bookends' openings, which are smaller in size and framed with lumber jambs and lintels. The visitor enters the gallery to enter the bookend, and exits the bookend to exit into the gallery.
As in the rest of Sketch's work, simple materials are applied with respect and attention to detail. The structure is modulated to take advantage of the dimensions of the plywood sheets and to achieve an organized and rational layout of joints. The sheets were carefully installed to incorporate the inevitable variations in texture and color and to avoid any repetitive pattern or impression of order.
Finally, Sketch was involved in the design of a semicircular bench of lumber and steel, which appears in the exhibition's enormous lobby and is repeated in some of the galleries. The modular design of the benches allows them to be grouped and arranged in multiple configurations, and its conceptual intentions remain congruent with the rest of the exhibition.
